Empires of the Undergrowth is a free indie ant colony simulator. Control and grow a colony of ants in the style of Dungeon Keeper and SimAnt by expanding across maps and fighting enemies.
Conquer the earth
With a heavy inspiration from classic 90's dungeon management style games, Empires of the Undergrowth tasks players with conquering a series of underground levels while insect enemies try to take out your miniature armies. Workers excavate dirt tunnels and tend to larvae while fighters train and attack any other insects which may wander into the nest. The game plays as a fairly typical resource management style strategy game, gathering food and supplies to create more fighter ants while defending the queen. Empires of the Undergrowth is currently in an early access state with no new updates since late 2016 and so is in an incomplete and fairly buggy state. Despite this, the graphics and general atmosphere are surprisingly decent. The game currently lacks a fleshed out campaign mode but is a refreshing example of a genre rarely seen lately.
Empires of the Undergrowth is an interesting homage to a number of classic games. While the game is far from complete, there is enough for older fans of the genre to experience some nostalgia.
